What is an air roll and what role does it play in the Air Curtain?

Air roll refers to the air flow that circulates between the discharge opening and the intake opening of an Air Curtain. An air roll consists of an even and constant flow of air that is channelled over a surface, typically at an entrance or an opening in the building.

The air roll prevents air exchange

Air Curtains create an air roll by sucking in and blowing out air, a barrier that minimises the exchange of air between indoor and outdoor areas. The air roll hits the floor and is partly sucked back in through the intake area of the air curtain. This air flow acts as a protective shield against external influences such as cold, heat, dust or even odours.

Teddington distinguishes between two different air rolls, the internal rotating air roll (IDW) and the external rotating air roll (ADW). Depending on the building and door situation, the Air Curtain can be installed with one of the two air rolls.

Detailed information on IDW and ADW installation of Air Curtains can be found here.

Teddington air curtain IDW installation

Air Curtain in IDW installation, e.g. in the event of overpressure in the building or only moderate wind load. The air roll moves from the door into the room.

Teddington air curtain ADW installation

ADW installation, e.g. with negative pressure in the building or with regular wind load. The air roll moves towards the door.
